What Do I Need? A Homebirth List

What do I need? A list of some things that are useful in a home birth.
Check with your careprovider about drugs and whether they carry them or you need to fill a script and provide them yourself.

Birth Supplies - Mama
birth pool - hose and attachments for easy filling, urns for instant hot water, buckets for easy removal of water for adding in hot
sieve for poo scooping
pile of old towels, cloth nappies
wheaty heaty, hot water bottles
rolling pin for back pressure
drop sheets for under the pool, under the sheets on your bed.
bowl for catching the placenta also an appropriate bag if you’re planning a lotus birth
bendy straws
labour-ade drinks and food
Emergency Essence and other flower essences or homeopathics as desired
ice lollies for sucking in between cx
birth ball, a bunch of cushions/pillows
heater for when baby arrives to keep the air warm enough
fan for hot labouring mama
ice chips, packs, for eating and pain relief
mirror for the bottom of the birth pool and torch to help you see it
large garbage bags
drop sheets or cheap shower curtains
lip balm
scent-free massage oil
squirt bottle for soothing the perineum for the first post-birth wee
pads for lochia
Joyous hint: Make up two sets of sheets with a plastic sheet in between and then after the birth have your support people whip off the top layer and voila! clean sheets for instant bliss

Carers - DH, doula/birth attendant, midwives
list of ph nos for all concerned so people can phone without asking you who or when to call if you're in labourland
soap, hand towel and nail brush
camera and/or video plus spare batteries and film
pile of videos/dvds/amusements for older children
Joyous tip: food for attendants - it's nice to check what their preferred beverage is beforehand and stock it


Baby bundle
fluffy towel for waterbirth babies
hot water bottle to heat it all up before bubs arrives
hat
outfit (actually I think skin on skin is best but if you must dress them...)
receiving blanket
nappy
a present from the baby to your older child
Joyous tip: keep in a basket all together for ease of transport around the house and in case of transfer to hospital

Finally, a good bottle of sparkling wine and some cake to really celebrate that Birth Day!
